For a while now Hilton and I have dabbled with horses, I came from Duchy Agricultural College in Cornwall, where I studied horses and rode and worked for other people as it was not affordable to own my own horses but it gave me a lot of experience as I worked event yards, riding stables and a hunting yard, and was also lucky enough to have a special pony to ride called "Ziggy" who taught me heaps. I then came to New Zealand where I learnt to fall off and eventually hold on and worked with dressage horses, showjumpers to pre trainers.
Hilton grew up on horses on the farm and did pony club and has always had a passion for breaking in and hunting. He was the huntsman for Mahia Hunt for three seasons and now one of the Masters for Mahia Hunt.
We currently have 7 broodmares which we have carefully selected in order to breed a good alround sport horse.
These range from thoroughbreds though to warm bloods. We currently have a thorough bred stallion "Last Chance" and our exciting news this years was the purchase of our very own Pure Bred Irish Draught Colt "Trevalda Mountain Eire".
A few years ago we took a trip to Ireland and attended a horse sale and were really impressed with the type and nature of these Irish horses, so this year we will start our breeding program .... very exciting..
Our youngstock is all grown out on the hills so they know where to put their feet, always handy when going at speed across our hills. We foal our horses in the front paddock and then they come in and are handled when weaned, then handled as yearlings and two year olds, then broken in as a three year old. The horses are then hacked and have a great basic grounding being ridden behind mobs of stock with dogs at their heels. They also start basic schooling. The horses are then turned out and brought back in as a four year old and their education is continued. Our horses are all branded with a duck!
Here is the Breeding Contract for Live Service
Barney is 16.2 hh, almost black.
Barney will be 7 in November, and this is his third hunt season where he has been used as a masters horse. He has done basic schooling on the flat and over jumps. He is good to ride in the field and lead other horses off, we lead the kids off him too.
Has good rhythm and paces
Sad sale but something has to go so we can bring on more young horses.
Shades showing us why our horses are good on their feet
Looking for that special horse, give us a yell you just never know whats in the paddock!!!
